Hemp Fashion for Health and the Future

Hatice Coşkun set out to keep this ancient textile culture of Rize alive by producing clothes from hemp fabric.

People say they love their children very much. Despite this, they do not pay much attention to what they feed, drink and dress them. Just like they do not pay attention to what they learn. Perhaps as a toxic effect of this excessive love, they have offered them foods that invite allergies and many other diseases, as well as clothes made from petroleum. However, here, there is a magnificent product from nature for your beloved baby: Hemp fabric. Turkey is still at the beginning of this path. In fact, we are in this state because we have broken away from our ancestors and traditions who paved the way and knew the countless ways hemp fabric can be used. But where is the harm done, it is a gain. A lady from Rize, Hatice Coşkun, who thinks like this, set out to keep this old textile culture of Rize alive by producing hemp fabric clothes. We talked to Hatice Hanım about hemp fabric, its processing and the difficulties she experienced on this path. This interview may seem like marketing. But we think about human health and here, we prioritize people.

- Hatice Hanım, how did you get interested in this business? Because it is a very unknown area in Türkiye. In the past, many things were done about hemp, but hemp has been forgotten in Türkiye for about half a century and you are trying to revive it.

In fact, since my childhood, the word hemp has always been around in our house. We have a fabric that goes back a long time, it is called 'Rize cloth fabric'. The warp of this cloth is cotton, the weft is hemp. It is still woven, but it is not very well known. Our primary goal was to bring this to the forefront. We have weaving workshops, women weave it by hand and send it to us, and we transform these into different products.

The sad truth: We have no hemp rope

- In the past, Türkiye produced fabric from hemp, but as we know, it is no longer available…

We produce it as fabric. Both in factories and our women weave it on hand looms in the old fashioned way. But we do not produce it as yarn. Our hemp rope comes from abroad, from China.

- Is weaving very common in Türkiye or is it something exceptional?

It is an exception for now, but it is becoming widespread. With the encouragement of our President, our hand-woven looms are currently operating in different provinces. This business is also a source of income for our women.

- We know that insects do not come to the place where this plant is located. Do you think hemp should be used in houses, roofs, wall filling, floors to prevent insects and to protect against radiation?

In fact, what you said used to be done. Now we are working to revive it. These are not the only features. The fabric also has climate suitability. It keeps cool in the summer and warm in the winter, for example. Let me also point out that cats and dogs love hemp. They have an extreme weakness for hemp fabric. They show more interest in hemp fabric than they show in other fabrics.

Perfect for storing legumes

- I think you are confusing cotton with hemp...

The texture of hemp is hard. For this reason, we cannot produce many clothes because the clothes are hard. This hardness can be eliminated with chemical means. But in Türkiye, we are working on how we can soften it without chemicals. Because people rightfully want '100% hemp'. Also, there is a lot of demand. I prefer cotton hemp because it is softer. In the past, our ancestors used to weave 100% hemp in Rize, but it was very itchy. Then, as a solution, they started to make the warp from cotton, which was also a luxury at that time. It is a wonderful product for our legumes with a fabric that is 100% hemp. When bags are made from it and the legumes are put in, no bugs come, they do not get wormy, they do not get damp. It is a great protector...

- You say something interesting. We think we are trying to preserve food by adding a lot of preservatives. However, we are poisoning ourselves. However, if we preserve food in bags woven from hemp rope, we will have solved this problem and every lady can weave or sew it by hand at home. So let's ask, do you also sell the fabric for this? Can they supply fabric from you or the market for this purpose?

It is true that we also sell pure hemp fabric. Those who wish can buy fabric and sew bags and purses themselves. Our ancestors used to preserve their products like this. They preserved their legumes by making bags like this.

- How is the demand for hemp products?

Everyone wants a carefree fabric, we want 'wear-and-go' fabrics that don't require ironing. But they are unhealthy fabrics. Let's have a small problem like ironing natural ones. When you sweat in some clothes, you want to take them off and change them. You don't feel it in hemp. It traps sweat and reduces the risk of getting sick.

There is a very good demand but we cannot keep up. Because we cannot find enough fabric. In other words, weaving workshops are insufficient. And sometimes we cannot supply the fabric of the quality you want. Also, before we start weaving, it is an issue to be able to supply thread. As you know, threads come from abroad, from China, in dollars. We demand a 'non-GMO certificate'. It takes a lot of effort and time until we find it, get it, weave our products, wash them and present them for sewing. I do not want to give up weaving. I do not want to become a factory either. Again, my biggest preference is for our women to weave this fabric by hand and produce it. This both provides employment and preserves naturalness.

Anyone with a needle can sew this

- The worst thing you have said so far was, "We import yarn." It is a great shame for our country that yarn has not been produced in the whole of Türkiye. So, who will do this job? Do factories need to be established? Municipalities, associations, or the private sector, who will do this job?

Cooperation is a must. Also, this business has a future. Anyone who believes in it can do it. Let me also state that we hear that there are some studies on this subject. Hopefully, it will happen. As long as our rope is produced, there is no problem. Frankly, we want to reduce the cost.

- Türkiye is a country known for its success in textiles. We produce yarn in our cities of Antep, Urfa, Manisa and Bursa. Also, textiles are quite developed, especially in these cities. Isn't it unfortunate that yarn from hemp is not produced in these cities?

The main reason is that hemp has been viewed as an enemy in our country for a long time. In addition, it is still forbidden to plant hemp with traditional and heirloom seeds. Only industrial seeds permitted by the ministry can be planted. It is not difficult to produce yarn from hemp. We have produced it with traditional methods and are still producing it. We have woven it on the loom and even produced products. But we can only produce 1 product in 1 month. Quantity production is a must in factories. God willing, our yarn companies will be interested in this.

- So, to whom do you sell your products, who exactly are your customers?

Rather, people who care about their health and are conscious about hemp prefer our products. The more we can explain the benefits of hemp, the more its use will increase.

- What kind of call would you make to women to popularize this product?

Hemp fabric is an easy-to-sew fabric. Anyone who has a needle can sew it. It is not a challenging fabric. When sewing, you can use a pattern from a child's outfit and sew it yourself. Ladies can buy fabric and sew their own clothes. They can also earn income.

- Do you have any cooperation with universities on this issue?

Yes, there is. For example, we receive a request for underwear, but the fabric does not stretch. We send the product requested in large size as XLarge because it does not stretch. However, we are also conducting R&D studies on how we can stretch this fabric naturally without chemicals. We are currently using vinegar water. But if anyone with information on this subject can get back to us, we would be happy, we would like to benefit from it. Otherwise, a chemical process is involved at every stage. Muğla University is currently conducting a study in this direction. We are waiting for the results.

Local manufacturers are stocking up

- Parents dress their children in colorful, dyed, glittery clothes thinking they value them, but these clothes are contaminated with chemicals and made of very bad materials. This also applies to adult clothes…

In the past, our ancestors used to weave 100% hemp in Rize, but it was very itchy. Then, as a solution, they started to make the warp from cotton, which was also a luxury at that time. Fabrics that are 100% hemp are a great product for our legumes.

Unfortunately, the products on the market are not suitable for wearing. Most of them are not things that can be touched by the body. We make undergarments. Undergarments are very important. They are the undergarments that women wear under their dresses. They do not make you sweat. In addition, we can produce any kind of textile product we want on our hemp looms. We can make everything from bags to quilts and pillows, curtains to children's blankets. Washing at 30 degrees is a must. Since it is a bit hard fabric, we recommend ironing it while it is damp. It opens better then. Everyone wants a fabric without worries, we want 'wear and go' fabrics that do not require ironing. But they are unhealthy fabrics. Let's also have a small problem like ironing for natural ones. When you sweat in some clothes, you want to take off and change your clothes. You do not feel it in hemp. It traps sweat and reduces the risk of getting sick. Also, some of our customers who want to use this fabric have a strange thought that they will get into a drug effect if they wear hemp fabric. How can the fabric have a drug effect? Also, hemp is not a drug, it is enjoyable and that is an exceptional situation that should be specially produced.

- Finally, do you have a message for those who want to pursue this career?

Young people who hear about this work and show interest come and find us. Especially those who do field work come. But we are stuck in some places, we cannot give direction. I heard that a hemp fiber factory will be opened in Rize. If the work on this issue increases, the field of work will also expand. It should also be noted: There are fiber separation factories and yarn making factories. There are already yarn factories in our country, they can take this fiber and turn it into yarn. Hemp has been cultivated for 2-3 years now and all the hemp planted is kept in warehouses. Some people ask us for hemp for use at home, for wall insulation, etc. In short, hemp is an extraordinary plant that we need to show interest in for our agriculture and health. God willing, interest will increase so that we will not have to import. On the contrary, we can make great profits by exporting.
